Starbucks’ Unicorn Frappuccino may be the worst drink yet

Unlike people who have their Starbucks daily fix, we only go to Starbucks every couple of months. As a parent, I’ve always thought the drinks were somewhat overpriced and not that healthy which lead me to discourage my sons from developing a  strong java habit.
We usually go when we travel internationally (some drinks do taste different) and when they advertise a new drink. So naturally, it was time to go since we were curious about Starbucks’ new unicorn frappuccino.

What’s all the buzz about?

Even though it contains a whopping 400 calories,59 grams of sugar and 10 grams of fat my son insisted on trying it.And I grudgingly relented. After all, you only live once, right?

Due to its insane popularity, we had to venture to three different Starbucks locations since they were out of the pixie ingredients needed to make this frappuccino.
We finally found it at a Starbucks inside our neighborhood  Vons grocery store!

Starbucks has a secret menu!

As we chatted with the barista, I found out that Starbucks like many other food venues offers several secret drinks that only aficionados know to ask for. Apparently, there’s even a Pokemon frappuccino. Who knew?

The Unicorn Frappuccino drink!

We gawked attentively as the young woman mixed the fairytale drink and blended it to a perfect hue to purple pink. And then before serving it to us dropped the sour blue sugary syrup on the sides.According to her description, the blended frozen drink mixed colored powders, milk, mango syrup and a blue sour syrup.

When we got it, we took a moment to admire it.It was pretty! In fact, it looked like a Barbie meet Lisa Frank sort of beverage.

Of course, we Instagrammed, snap chatted, tweeted it from all sides ( I know, the curse of social media!

But how did it taste?

When I took my first sip, I found it excruciatingly sweet and somewhat tasteless. My son described it as sipping a cold bowl of sugar.

Then we tried to mix it to change the color and taste. Turns out that is not an easy task when it comes to a frozen drink.
In fact, we needed to remove the lid and stir it aggressively with a straw. However, the result wasn’t too encouraging.
It became a purplish drink with a sour taste that reminded us of expired milk.I was ashamed to spit it out or ask for my money back, but in hindsight, I really should have!

As my son noted it was the worst frappuccino we’ve ever had.

But let’s not end things on a sour note

While talking about our experience my son reminisced about the best Frappuccino he’s  had. I wholeheartedly concurred!
It turns out, we both loved the boysenberry Frappuccino sold in the California MarketPlace just outside Knott’s Berry Farm park entrance.
The drink, exquisitely blended, tasted like a boysenberry cookies and cream version of a frappuccino. And the whipped cream on top made it even more luxurious, particularly on the hot summer day we visited the park.

Of course, this experience will not deter us from going back and trying the company’s new flavors in a month or two. We understand that even experienced brands make mistakes.

Hopefully, in the future, the company will choose taste over appearance when it comes to new products.
