We loved  Avengers Infinity War

Hands down, there is so much to love about this latest movie. For starters, there is breathtaking cinematography that presents itself even better in IMAX form. The plot though complicated is beautifully interwoven. And overall this movie ‘s message is about the unity of positive forces against evil ones that is always a hallmark of Marvel storylines.

The plot in a nutshell

This movie heavily centers around Thanos and the six infinity stones. Thanos wants to collect all six and own the Infinity Gauntlet, rendering him unparalleled omnipotence.

The Infinity Stones named after elements in the universe come in different colors.

  • Blue (space) enables intergalactic travel and omnipresence.
  • Red ( reality), allows its possessor to alter reality
  • Purple ( power), yields immense power
  • Yellow ( mind), boosts mental capabilities
  • Green ( time )  affords the ability to freeze, slow, or speed up time
  • Orange ( soul), unknown powers

#1How complex is the Avengers Infinity War plot?

Marvel is famous for action movies, and this one is no different.
What is different is the quantity. Avengers ‘Infinity War’ is Marvel on steroids with action galore happening in various spots across the universe with a plethora of characters.

Though the creators managed to amalgamate the plot reasonably well, some viewers will find it very confusing to follow. So, unless you know your Marvel history, you might find the story tough to follow.

#2 So how can I prepare my kids for the movie?

Like previously mentioned, this movie wasn’t meant to be seen in isolation. Most of the Marvel superheroes in Avengers’ Infinity War’, are shown in an abridged version. After all, It is the 19th installment of a continuing saga.So the best thing to do watch previous flicks to understand what is happening.
Since it is impossible to watch 18 movies in a short period; here are the top five  ( in order of importance)  to introduce newbies to the Marvel ropes.

  • 2014  Guardians of the Galaxy introduces the main villain Thanos as well as the group of engaging misfits.
  • 2018  Black Panther shows more of the Black Panther and Wakanda.
  • 2017  Thor Ragnarok helps viewers understand the connection between Thor and the Hulk
  • 2015  Avengers Age of Ultron explains the affair between Scarlet Witch and Vision
  • 2016  Doctor Stranger elaborates on the doctor’s mind-bending capabilities.
  • Avengers: 'Infinity War’ Top Ten Parental Concerns Answered guardians of the galaxy

#3 So how scary is the villain?

That is debatable.
Thanos is a large and wrinkled one that is seen stepping on bodies in the first few minutes of the movies. But it isn’t too graphic!

Visually he isn’t deformed or scary in any way neither is he too threatening. He does have a henchman that does that dirty job for him.

Thanos is seen as ruthless in some scenes and compassionate in others, so he is one complicated dude. In fact, my son pointed out he is the only character that is fully developed in this movie. Viewers finally see what motivates the ‘Mad Titan ‘along with what makes him happy and sad.

#4 So how many characters die in this movie?

Well, that’s the sixty-four million dollar question.
We’ve been reminded that Avengers ‘Infinity War’ is the showdown and the latest featurette hinted at the fact that we would be saying goodbye to some of our beloved heroes.

So in the movie, you will see some beloved characters turning to dust LITERALLY. I don’t want to spoil the surprise so I won’t mention names. But be warned that there is a tear-jerking moment when one ( that kids love) explicitly says he doesn’t want to die seconds before he does.

However, do remind your kids that the red and green gems in the  Marvel Universe can change matters so people technically might be able to come back to life.

#5 Level of violence

Marvel is famous for its fantasy violence, and this movie is no different.

From an early age, kids learn to recognize fantasy violence as the action where characters disappear in loud, fiery booms. This means most can watch without becoming overly distressed or upset.n a scale of 1 to 10 range of fantasy violence this would be a seven ranking lower than Black Panther (a nine) with its close-ups of a body to body combat.

In today’s digital world most kids have seen fantasy violence in video games, tv cartoons, and movies. But since there are isolated scenes of some torture and brutality  I would recommend it for kids ten and up.

#6 Profanity and Self-deprecating humor

Surprisingly very little!  Overall we didn’t find the language too offensive.
Yes, the characters blurt a few s@@t, D@@n, Hells and A##holes. However, compared to other movies that are PG 13 this was quite mild. The humor was noticeably thin on the self-deprecating side which put it lower on the scale compared to Thor Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

#7 Sexual content

There is no nudity in Avengers: Infinity War. The only one without a top is Drax, but that’s part of his identity. And there are two kisses between couples but nothing overdone that will make anyone uncomfortable.

#8 It is very long!

The length might be the deal breaker for some. This movie is the longest at a whopping 2h and 30 minutes which can render anyone antsy. The question is for each parent to ask themselves whether their kid can sit quietly for that long.

#9 Should I see it in IMAX or 3D?

The short answer is yes! After all, it was actually shot in IMAX form.
Watching the movie in IMAX is best but if there’s no IMAX theater close by, then at least go for the 3D version. It will make a huge difference in your viewing experience.

#10 Why is it important to watch the credits?

The credits are a long-standing Marvel tradition, and this one is no different. This movie has one of the longest if not the most extended credit list we’ve seen so far.We timed it at over eight minutes.
But after sitting through it all, you learn this movie was filmed in multiple locations including Scotland, Iceland, and Norway you get to see what Marvel’s next big thing will be.Hint -watch for that mysterious phone call.

Autism tips

  • You can prepare your kids by watching the recommended films  ahead of time
  • If your kid is noise sensitive, then this loud movie may not be a good fit for them.  If they insist on seeing the movie, then pack a pair of noise-canceling headphones.
  • Since the film is so long going to the restroom before it starts is a wise move.
